The second issue of SS African Mercury was delayed due to a number of developments that made it difficult to encapsulate the moment in a brief editorial statement. A politico-ideological situation that had seemed closed unexpectedly opened up, calling for further reflection and discussion. Before considering some of the distinguishing features of this widened horizon, an overview as it relates to the American Left is in order.
